Welcome to our first blog post of the season.  We are hoping to add a new blog every Friday so keep an eye out on our website for this.  We may change it to every other week as we get busier in the season but we will keep you updated on this.

PLANTS

We have been busy planting for all of our gardening customers since January.  Our perennials are ready for sale in the greenhouse, but we are still waiting on a few varieties to grow more before we add them to our tables.  We have added some new varieties to what we have carried in the past, but there are some that we aren’t growing this year as well.

Annuals are being planted daily and we have some great returning varieties as well as several new ones!  We are very excited about the new varieties and cannot wait to see what our customers think.  You will find the annuals in several sizes of pots and packs (4-pack, 6-pack, and jumbo 6-packs).

Cole crops are ready for sale including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, lettuce, spinach, etc.

We also have our seed potatoes, onion sets (smaller green onion-type), and onion plants (larger onions)  We also have vegetable seeds available for sale.   The following is a link to the Kansas Garden Guide.  It is full of information about planting, watering, mulching, fertilizing, etc. for vegetable gardens.   You will need to copy and paste this into your browser.

HOUSEPLANT OF THE MONTH

This year we have implemented a Houseplant of the Month and the month of March, we are highlighting peperomia. Peperomia is a large genus of ornamental foliage tropical plants in the family Piperaceae native to Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean. With more than 1,500 known species, like watermelon peperomia and baby rubber plants, these hearty plants vary significantly in appearance.

Most boast thick, fleshy leaves that contribute to their drought tolerance and vigor. All Peperomia plants are low maintenance, slow-growing, and can be planted year-round.

Peperomia Plant Care:

  • Place in medium to bright indirect light and should be protected from direct
  • Choose a potting mix that is loose and well-draining but still retains moisture well
  • Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings; be careful not to overwater
  • Maintain warm temperatures and medium to high humidity and avoid frost

LAWN CARE

Now is the perfect time to be applying a pre-emergent to your cool and warm season grasses.  You should apply this in early spring to control grassy and broadleaf weeds. For best results, the application should be followed by ¼  to ½” rainfall or irrigation.   Check out our Facebook page for product information regarding this.
