Spring has arrived with a change in weather, teasing us with a little thunder and rain yesterday.  We are still preparing the greenhouse and feel like we are getting closer to being ready for the spring growing season.

Our website has been updated with some lists for you to check out.  We’ve added our shrub list (including Clematis), as well as many of our 4” annuals, perennials, rose bushes, and geraniums.  We still need to finish up the herb and vegetable lists before we make them visible on our site.

PERENNIAL OF THE WEEK

We are going to start highlighting a Perennial of the Week (or possibly two) in addition to our Houseplant of the Month.

This week’s first Perennial of the Week is Alexander’s White Candytuft Iberis.  This looks like a blanket of pure white carpet with narrow, evergreen leaves from mid to late spring.  The bonus is that it has a tendency to rebloom in the fall.  This is an old-time favorite and is a charming plant for perennial gardens, as well as being drought tolerant and attractive to butterflies.  It is ideal as edging or groundcover, as well as to fill in crevices in walls or between the stones of walkways.  It will grow 8-10” tall and spread 12-24 inches wide.

We also have a second Perennial of the Week and it is Champagne Bubbles Iceland Poppy Mix.   It has large, cup-shaped flowers in a mix of white, orange, pink, red and yellow.  This easy to grow plant with its delicate, crinkled blooms  is loved by pollinators.  The blooms are long-lasting and will attract bees and is frost tolerant.  Plant in full sun in zones 3-7.

HOUSEPLANT OF THE MONTH

Our Houseplant of the Month for April will be Streptocarpus Ladyslippers in Strawberry Ice and Blue Ice.  We will have them available in a 4” pot for $10.99 each.  Compact with small, velvety, wrinkled strappy leaves and large magnificent flowers of red-velvet or pale blue, which contrasts nicely with the darker veins on the lower three lobes.

Plant Care:

  • Well-drained soil
  • Bright, filtered light
  • Allow soil to dry out between waterings
  • Watch for insects (leafhoppers, mealybugs, thrips, vine weevil and tarsonemid mites)
  • Deadhead regularly and remove damaged leaves.
  • Cut back after flowering.

VEGETABLES & MISCELLANEOUS

We have been busy setting our vegetable tables with tomatoes, peppers, greens, and we still have cole crops (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage), and greens (lettuce, leeks, spinach) available.  Quantities may be limited depending on the variety so you may want to call first to check on certain varieties.

It is not too late to get potatoes planted and we have onions sets and onion plants, as well as garlic available.  Our seed stand is full and we are busy weighing off our bulk seed for those who need more seeds than what is available in the seed stand.  We also carry Jersey Jewel Asparagus, which can be found in the cooler in the shop, as well as strawberry roots.    We will have strawberry plants ready to sell in about 10 days.

CHANGE IN HOURS APRIL 1

Beginning on Monday, April 1st our hours will change. We will be open Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm. We will be closed on Easter Sunday.

We look forward to seeing everyone soon as you prepare for the upcoming planting season.

Happy Planting!
